Proove: A Pizza To Be Proud Of

When I visited Sheffield I knew one of the places I had to go back to was Proove. On Fulwood Road, just on the edge of Sheffield city centre, is the award-winning authentic pizza restaurant Proove. With locations now in Manchester and Hertford as well as two restaurants in Sheffield, Proove has been proudly serving up slow-proved 20-hour pizzas that are hand-stretched, topped with the freshest ingredients and cooked to perfection using the authentic pizzaiola methods. What makes Proove even more of a must-go restaurant is its dedication to serving vegan pizzas alongside its traditional ones. Proove sports a vegan menu offering a multitude of vegan pizzas, starters, sides and deserts so there is something for everyone.

Upon visiting the Broomhill venue you are instantly struck by the smell of the freshly cooked pizzas and the warmth of the charcoal pizza oven. The restaurant is warm and inviting, and the smells make you instantly ready for pizza. Already hungry, we started with the vegan bruschetta. Toasted homemade ciabatta with vegan mozzarella & rocket and fresh chopped tomatoes combined with garlic, basil & olive oil. On sight alone, you could tell how fresh everything was but the taste was incredible. Whether it’s bruschetta or pan con tomate, I am a sucker for tomato on bread. I was a little apprehensive at first because vegan cheese doesn’t always agree with me but this tasted so good that I could hardly tell a difference between this and regular mozzarella. To pair with this and the rest of the meal we got the Proove Pale Ale, brewed in Sheffield’s own Abbeydale Brewery it was the perfect pint to pair with a pizza.

Following the starter we ordered the funghi pizza. San Marzano D.O.P tomatoes, vegan mozzarella and portobello mushrooms roasted in truffle oils & extra virgin olive oil. Anything truffle-related is our kryptonite. As soon as we see truffle on the menu, whatever that dish is, it’s getting ordered. This was no exception. The pizza was cooked to absolute perfection, and the cornicione leopardo (black spots on the pizza crust) added to the authentic Neapolitan feel of the pizza. The mushrooms roasted in truffle oils were filled with so much flavour that each bit of the pizza was a treat. Whether you love mushrooms, like the taste of truffles, or if you’re just a pizza fan, I would 100% recommend trying this pizza because it was honestly one of the best I’ve had. We also ordered the vegan calzone which had San Marzano D.O.P. tomatoes inside along with vegan mozzarella, roast aubergine, roast courgettes & roast peppers seasoned with garlic, parsley & black pepper. I also added mushrooms to this as a little extra to treat myself. This was one of the freshest and most flavoursome calzones I’ve had. I’ve found sometimes it’s really easy to cook a calzone only to find out it’s still undercooked in the middle, but this did not fall victim to that. All of the roasted vegetables inside worked together, the vegan cheese was well melted and the marinara sauce on the side added that little extra freshness. If you are in Sheffield and are craving a pizza or just want somewhere nice to go for a meal. Stop off at Proove. I promise that you will find something that you like and it will be the best meal of the day!
