The Fields Beneath: Plant-Based from Scratch
The Fields Beneath is a cafe, wine shop and local hub in the centre of Kentish Town, focusing on three of the most important things in life: food, coffee and people. Opening in 2012 Fields Beneath ran as a ‘food from scratch’ cafe and eventually dropped all animal products from their menu going fully plant-based. The coffee is directly sourced from Costa Rica and they even run open studios on evenings to local artists and spoken word poets whilst serving natural wins. I was fortunate enough to drop into The Fields Beneath a couple of months ago and it is an absolute gem. I had no idea it was there but I will most definitely be back again. The food was exactly what I was looking for and looking at the rest of their menu I need to try more and more.
One oat latte, one kombucha, a Thai tofish brioche and an oyster mushroom 'pastrami' bagel please… and can I get a vegan scotch egg, please? Let me tell you the selection at The Fields Beneath is incredible, with a regularly changing menu you can get anything from a hoisin mushroom brioche, bbq jerk jackfruit brioche, chilli crisp aubergine ciabatta and even a tofu egg and yolk sauce bagel with a sausage patty, cheeze and garlic butter. However, this time I tried the Thai tofish brioche, the oyster mushroom pastrami bagel and I couldn’t leave without trying the vegan scotch egg. The tofish brioche is everything I could’ve wanted out of lunch. Tofu fish, Lime leaf mayonnaise, zesty herb salad, cucumber, pickled carrot & chilli, crispy onions. It was so fresh and crispy and absolutely packed full of flavour that I could’ve had two there and then.
The oyster mushroom pastrami bagel was up next. Oyster mushroom pastrami with vegan cheese, sauerkraut, pickles and spicy mayo. It was just as messy but just as tasty as the Tofish bagel and once again I could have devoured two of them. The scotch egg was a thing of beauty. Vegan scotch eggs are a modern-day marvel to me and I still don’t fully understand them but I love every minute of eating them. If you get the chance please visit The Fields Beneath, whether its for a coffee, a bagel or even some cake, I promise you it will become your new favourite spot!
